Sumer constitutes a journey that's lasted 3 and a half years. The music for Sumer evolved so much over the development period, growing alongside the game itself. Building the "Sumerian" sound (as no extant examples of Sumerian music exist) was the first task - the team and I tried a few different approaches, and ended up landing on a track made of things I had around my apartment, including a classical guitar, an ocarina, and some pots and pans. That became the title theme for Sumer.

I would go on to write loads of music in spurts, as the designers iterated on the game, I was iterating on the music, and we were all figuring out how the music would fit into the experience. This is the challenge that fascinates me with game scoring. It's sort of like this massive musical puzzle that one must piece together painstakingly. As the project went on, I was met with the difficult task of building tracks to fit with pieces I had written years ago, which tended to involve quite a bit of remixing and mastering as my audio production chops developed.
